FULL FRENCH DIVISION

David Benson (United Kingdom)

On leaving university I worked with the Brampton Charolais herd in North Yorkshire where I was invited to judge several regional Charolais shows.

After the thirteen years working at Brampton, I was appointed as Chief Executive of the British Charolais Cattle Society, from which I retired in 2017 after 29 years of service.

Because of the nature of the appointment, it excluded me from judging Charolais classes in the UK. However, I was invited to judge Charolais at the Harare Royal Show in Zimbabwe, which was a great honour and an experience I will never forget.

Since my retirement from the BCCS I have judged some Charolais and interbreed competitions.

David Bondfield (Australia)

David is the co-founder and former CEO of Palgrove Pastoral Co., which operates several breeding and finishing properties across central and southern Queensland and New South Wales. Palgrove runs registered purebred herds in both Charolais and Ultrablack cattle with over 3,800 registered breeding age females. The stud sells up to 1000 registered Charolais and Ultrablack Angus bulls each year.

Bulls have sold to all Australian States, as well as Russia, Thailand, PNG and Pacific Islands, plus semen into Canada, USA, France, UK and New Zealand. Palgrove also runs a large beef commercial herd, as well as prime lamb and grain enterprises.

In 2021, David and his wife, Prue, were awarded the DW Vincent Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Australian Beef Cattle Industry. In 2017, they were awarded the Australian Farmer of the Year and in 2015 the Australian Livestock Producer of the Year. David is highly regarded as a cattle judge and has judged stud and commercial cattle at every major Royal Show in Australia, as well as in New Zealand, Canada, USA and Scotland. He has judged the World Hereford, Braford, Galloway, Charolais and Limousin Conferences and has also judged purebred sheep at several Royal Shows. He is past president of the Charolais Society of Australia and Queensland Sheep Breeders Assn. and has been a member of numerous beef industry committees.

Hugo Retailleau (France)

I have judged in Denmark, Ireland, Portugal and many times in France and especially the Moulin and Paris shows. My farm, Godet Retailleau, has 600 head of pedigreed Charolais, breeding females on 300 hectares.

PUREBRED DIVISION

Jimmy Wilson (Scotland)

Jimmy Wilson, previously of Barnyards Farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, farmed Charolais cattle from 1990 until 2012 when he dispersed his 77-strong Ugie herd at the Stirling bull sale.

Since joining the British Charolais Cattle Society in 1990, Jimmy has been fully involved with the society and has travelled extensively around the world, visiting far and wide from France to Hungary to the USA and Canada.

During his time as a Charolais breeder, he has won numerous prizes including one of the highest accolades in the UK, receiving champion animal for both his male and female cattle at the premier Perth bull sale. His champion bull, Ugie Legend, went on to make headlines by selling for 26,000 guineas in 2002.

Jimmy has been internationally recognized for his talent at recognizing premium stock and has previously judged Charolais cattle at the Royal Agricultural Show as well as the premier Perth Bull Sales in the UK.

He formerly served on the British Charolais Cattle Society council as Chairman in 2005 and 2006, before going on to become President in 2010.

Jimmy and his wife Betty hosted the World Charolais Congress at their farm in 2012 before he retired his stock in September of that year.

Robert E. Williams, Ph.D. (USA)

Robert Williams, Ph.D. currently serves as the Executive Director of the American Wagyu Association, Post Falls, Idaho.

Williams was raised on a farm and ranch near Freedom, Oklahoma, where along with his family, remains active today with a farming and cow/calf operation.

Williams earned his undergraduate degree from the Oklahoma State University Department of Animal Science having competed on the National Champion Livestock Judging team as a student at OSU. Furthermore, Williams was recognized in 2014 by the Department as a Graduate of Distinction for his contributions to the beef cattle industry.

Williams began his career with Beefmaster Breeders Universal in San Antonio, Texas. After five years at BBU, Williams accepted a farm management position with Still Hills Beefmasters in Ft. Payne, Alabama, before returning to Graduate School, at the University of Georgia, completing his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Beef Breeding and Genetics. Williams’ graduate work focused on genetic prediction of economically important traits to the beef industry. His work in ultrasound was fundamental to the incorporation of ultrasound as a genetic improvement tool in beef cattle. This led Williams to joining the staff of the American-International Charolais Association as Director of Breed Improvement and Foreign Marketing Programs.

While at AICA, Williams led the development of a customized, web-based selection index tool to compute economic values in real-time. Additionally, under Williams’ direction, AICA was the first to incorporate ultrasound on yearling replacement seedstock as a correlated trait to predict carcass merit in beef cattle.

Williams has travelled extensively promoting U.S. genetics worldwide in addition to being an invited speaker both domestically within the United States and internationally. Furthermore, Williams has been invited to judge internationally both regional and national shows, for multiple breeds in Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Prior to joining the American Wagyu Association, Williams was employed as the General Manager for Cain Cattle Company directing all operations. Cain Cattle Company is a supplier of elite beef cattle genetics with two ranching divisions in the state of Mississippi.

Lee & Dawn Wilson, Miller Wilson Angus (Canada)
Lee and Dawn have been in the Angus business for 45 years and run 150 cows. They have exported genetics to 27 countries. For over 30 years, they have used an extensive embryo transplant program in their herd. They have a real passion for showing cattle and have been fortunate to produce many National Champions in Canada and around the world. Their sole livelihood comes from their cattle. They have three kids, Ty (Ariel), Dakota (Bobby) & Jaelayne (Loren) as well as three beautiful grandchildren and one on the way.
Their judging resume includes: World Congresses for Pinzgauer, Salers and Gelbvieh; Japan National Angus & Polled Herford shows, Australia National Angus Show, Sydney (Australia) Royal Easter Show, Colombian National Angus & Brangus shows, Mexican National Angus show, Tullamore show in Ireland, U.S.A. Charolais and Highland national shows, U.S.A. Angus, Brahma, Charolais, Dexter, Hereford, Highland, Limousin, Lowlines and Simmental shows; Canadian Angus, Blonde D’Aquitaine, Charolais, Chianina, Dexter, Galloway, Gelbvieh, Polled Hereford, Horned Hereford, Limousin, Lowlines, Maine Anjou, Murray Grey, Pinzgauer, Salers, Simmental, Shorthorn, South Devon and Speckle Park National shows; as well as hundreds of provincial and regional cattle shows across Canada.

Maury Dorta De Souza Junior (Brazil)

Maury Dorta is a Veterinarian Doctor, with a postgraduate degree in Animal Science, with a focus on Beef improvement.
He has been a Fieldman at the Brazilian Canchim Breeders Association for 12 years, currently responsible for the genetic beef improvement programs of 8 taurine and composite breeds, assisted by the Embrapa Geneplus Program in Brazil, USA, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay.

John Mercer (Australia)
John has been breeding both Charolais and Charbray cattle since the early 1980s with their studs being registered in 1988
His first judging was as an associate judge at the Brisbane Royal in 1993.
He has since judged at many country shows throughout Queensland and New South Wales, including as the overjudge for junior judging schools, and has led steer competitions.
He has judged Charbray, Speckle Park and Bazadais breeds at the Brisbane Royal, plus more recently judged five breeds at Rockhampton Beef Week.

Ing. José Manuel (Pepe) Medina Chapa, Zootechnical Agronomist Engineer (Mexico)

Pepe has been the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Charolais, Charbray Herd Book Association in Mexico since 2003. He has been the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Simmental Simbrah Simmangus Mexican Association since 2007. He is a Founding member of the Mexican Akaushi Association 2019. He is a collaborator in the realization of Genetic Assessments for meat quality in Charolais, Charbray, Simmental and Simbrah breeds. He also serves as a consultant to several ranches that produce registered livestock.

He is a Qualifying judge in more than 120 National and International Exhibitions in 7 countries for Charolais, Charbray, Simmental, Simbrah, Simmangus, Brangus (black and red) and Angus breeds.
